چکیده

Question: To what extent can learning facilitate group formation in a social forager?Model features: An individual-based simulation model is used to explore frequencyanddensity-dependent interactions between mobile learners and non-selective stayers that foragein a patchy resource environment.Key assumption: Foraging efficiency peaks at intermediate group sizes. Conclusions: Frequency-dependent interplay between mobile learners and sedentary stayersrepresents a general mechanism of group formation that maintains the advantage of socialforaging. When rare or at moderate frequencies, learners redistribute and aggregate in groupsof optimal size. This enhances the foraging performance of both learners and stayers. Whenthe learning strategy dominates in the population, group size dynamics become unstable, resource intake for learners drops, and stayers do best. The strategies mutually benefit fromeach other and may potentially co-exist.

Where is behavioural ecology going?

Since the 1990s, behavioural ecologists have largely abandoned some traditional areas of interest, such as optimal foraging, but many long-standing challenges remain. Moreover, the core strengths of behavioural ecology, including the use of simple adaptive models to investigate complex biological phenomena, have now been applied to new puzzles outside behaviour. But this strategy comes at a cos...

Pay-off-biased social learning underlies the diffusion of novel extractive foraging traditions in a wild primate

The type and variety of learning strategies used by individuals to acquire behaviours in the wild are poorly understood, despite the presence of behavioural traditions in diverse taxa. Social learning strategies such as conformity can be broadly adaptive, but may also retard the spread of adaptive innovations. Strategies like pay-off-biased learning, by contrast, are effective at diffusing new ...

Fractal Population Ecology Theory

Abstract Purpose - The aim of this paper is to describe the population ecology theory through fractal thinking, an emergent human operating system that is creative, adaptive, healthy, and evolutionary; furthermore, a parallel is drawn between the population ecology model and the fractal structure. Top-down hierarchies are typically characterized by command and control systems of the authority t...

Juvenile Galápagos Pelicans Increase Their Foraging Success by Copying Adult Behaviour

Social learning is the building block of culture and traditions in humans and nonhuman animals, and its study has a long history. Most investigations have addressed either the causation or the function of social learning. Though much is known about the underlying mechanisms of social learning, demonstrations of its adaptive value in a natural setting are lacking. Here we show that juvenile brow...

Reproductive state affects reliance on public information in sticklebacks.

The degree to which animals use public and private sources of information has important implications for research in both evolutionary ecology and cultural evolution. While researchers are increasingly interested in the factors that lead individuals to vary in the manner in which they use different sources of information, to date little is known about how an animal's reproductive state might af...
